Thib Guicherd-Callin, Assistant Director and Program Manager for LOCKSS

I’m pleased to announce that Thib Guicherd-Callin has accepted the continuing role of Assistant Director and Program Manager for LOCKSS. Thib brings unsurpassed experience and skills to this role. He joined the LOCKSS Program as a Summer intern in 2005 and has been with it since then. In his own words, he is “the intern who never left!” He worked his way from software engineer to manager of the software engineering team, and contributed to momentous milestones in the Program’s history, including the pilot and inception of the CLOCKSS Archive, the rise of Private LOCKSS Networks, and most recently the launch of the LAAWS (LOCKSS Architected As Web Services) initiative.

Since October 2019, he has been serving as the acting program manager for LOCKSS, and for the last year has been overseeing the entirety of the LOCKSS program, including staff and operations, LAAWS re-engineering, ongoing support for the CLOCKSS Archive, and more. He has represented the Program at conferences, in professional groups and as part of major grants.

LOCKSS is an auxiliary unit of the Stanford Libraries. The Program, its award-winning protocol and its enduring methodologies, pioneered by SUL emeriti Vicky Reich and David S.H Rosenthal, ushered the era of distributed digital preservation, giving rise to its eponymous acronym: Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe. The LOCKSS software empowers memory organizations like research libraries to create sustainable digital preservation communities and to build digital collections cooperatively, with applications in e-journals and e-books, government documents, electronic theses and dissertations, digitized content, Web archiving, post-cancellation access, and many others.

LOCKSS is an enduring and substantial presence in the international field of digital preservation, and the LOCKSS team directly supports long-term access to cultural heritage and research materials to hundreds of institutions, and for tens of thousands of journal titles and other sources of premium information, across the globe.

And now with Thib’s leadership and steady hand at the helm, LOCKSS is well positioned for another generation of success.
