DC Chapter of AI4LAM Holds First Meeting

On March 20, 2025, the DC Chapter of AI4LAM held its first meeting at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in downtown Washington, and Library of Congress staff were excited to take part in the event.

AI4LAM is an international, collaborative community focused on advancing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in, for, and by libraries, archives, and museums. AI4LAM has several operational working groups, community groups, and regional chapters. The DC chapter includes staff from across various agencies, such as the Library, the National Gallery of Art, the Department of Defense, and the Smithsonian. There are two other AI4LAM chapters: the Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand Chapter and Chapitre francophone (the French-speaking chapter).

The event was well attended in person and virtually. Abbey Potter (Library of Congress) and Mike Trizna (Smithsonian Institution), co-chairs of the AI4LAM secretariat, hosted the meeting.

Our aim was to make introductions and discuss the chapter’s values, interests and goals. For instance, are people most interested in talking about AI ethics? Or how about AI-assisted descriptions of collections? Perhaps a specific tool like OpenAI’s Whisper? We also needed to touch on the nitty gritty administrative details of our chapter’s operations, like how frequently we meet, how we communicate, and so on.

The group went through a few ideation exercises and jotted down thoughts related to our previous experiences in working groups. What did we find useful? What are things that we should avoid? In the following image you can see us brainstorming, jotting down ideas, and organizing those ideas into larger categories.

We can’t wait to share more information as the chapter develops, so stay tuned! For more information about AI4LAM, please visit our website.
